Teotihuacan

abba-dingo

Last Thursday we got up before dawn so we could catch the tour bus to the ruins of Teotihuacán, a civilization so old that it had been abandoned for centuries when the Aztecs arrived. Our family are not 'tour group' people, but in this case the ruins were an hour away, we weren't super-familiar with the history of the site, and we were stopping for lunch and mezcal on the way home, so it sounded like the way to go.

By and large, it was. We got there just in time to see the sun rise over the iconic Pyramid of the Sun; maybe the single most photogenic moment I've ever experienced. A dozen or more hot air balloons from the balloon tours filled the air, making the plain look like New Mexico (we could have gone, but the $400 price tag was not attractive.) Our guide knew his stuff and slowly (very slowly; I thought Mike was going to gnaw his leg off) took the group around all of the major structures-- the pyramids of the Sun and Moon, the temple of Quetzalcoatl, the central excavations; chatting animatedly the whole time. The weather stayed clear and warm all day and we got to see it all (and it was fabulous.)

NOTE: The temple of Quetzalcoatl, which is one of the few main structures you can climb, has steep stairs but no guardrail. I have glaucoma which is bad enough to nerf my depth perception, so getting down was quite the nerve-wracking experience.

Unsurprisingly, it's hard to capture the majesty of one of the first great American civilizations in a half-page blog, so here are some pics:
