In Sickness and In Health

abba-dingo

Last Thursday, we decided to do another tourist thing (yeah; two in one week, who knew) and visited the Tres Raices vineyard, about 40 minutes out of town. Raine and I first became aware of the Lure of the Grape when we were in Ithaca NY with our friends Chris and Andria, maybe ten years back, and saw a sign pointing to the Wine Trail. Suffice it to say that the rest of the vaca was hike, drink, hike, drink, and an awesome time was had by all.

Tres Raices is stunning and well thought out. It's only 40 hectares of vines, but there's a great restaurant, tasting rooms, tiny houses so you can stay on the estate if you're really hardcore, and even a wedding chapel for those blessed events. We had flights of six wines, all of which were better than decent, met a pair of travelers from Oregon who were staying in SMA for a wedding, had lunch at the restaurant, which was fabulous, bought a bottle of really nice Merlot, and took our van home. Stellar day all around. https://vinedostresraices.com

That night, though, I started coughing and could not stop. Goo was running down the back of my throat, and I took a couple of Benadryl to no effect. Friday was worse, and by Saturday morning I had a definite fever and was starting to make involuntary gurgling noises. Raine found an urgent care address and off we went.

The Unimed office was right outside of town. By the time we got there I was sweating for non-illness related reasons (new town, weren't in the local medical system, had no idea about procedures or costs) but honestly, they made things as easy as possible. Five minutes after the paperwork was finished, we were in with the doctor. He checked me out, told me I had bronchitis (which I already knew, I'm a frequent flyer), and prescribed me literally half a page of inhalers, steroids, antibiotics, aspirin and stuff to stop the dripping. The visit was $25 USD. Wow. (http://www.unimedhs.com.mx/ )

Went next door to a grocery with a farmacia in the back; they had everything in stock. As the pile rose on the counter I started regretting having sold everything we could mortgage-- but again, the total was just $113 for seven separate medications, and we charged it. No insurance requests at any point in the process. If you're reading this and not wondering 'why can't the US get its medical care shit together?' you're clearly not me.

Last night I finally slept a little, and Raine, who is the most patient human being on the planet and who has been listening to me make AHHHGGHHSNRRRRK noises for the last 72 hours, finally got a little too. Hopefully sleep is trending up.
