Prague is beautiful. Really really beautiful. It's got much more green space than I expected, and we really enjoyed the parks and gardens in the month we were there. We rented a charming apartment up in the hills by Prague Castle. After 5 or 6pm, it was fairly quiet in the neighborhood. We walked a lot, and took the very convenient tram system just about every day (one way, two people, $2.60). Prague used to be dirt cheap. It's still reasonable, but beware eating on the main tourist streets. The food isn't as good, and costs twice as much as you'll pay if you just wander a little bit.
We don't speak Czech. But we got by fairly easily with English. I had an eye appointment and bought new glasses. I also went to a dentist for a medium cleaning, and to fill a cavity. All went very smoothly with everything conducted in English.
Our budget was $4,300 USD for 31 days and we spent $3,706 -- $594 under budget. While renting a place for year is budget friendly, renting a short term rental is not. We spent a whopping $2069 for a large 1 bedroom apartment with a laundry room across the hall (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/662810) We didn't have a lot of rentals to choose from in high season. We loved the apartment and the location was great, but we definitely spent too much of our budget on housing. Note -- the dental and eye appointments are not included in our budget totals, as these aren't related to staying Prague.

Prague is a great city, especially for daily living. It ranks highly on our list of places to retire.
