Our budget for our travels is $4k per month, which covers rent, food, transportation, utilities, sight-seeing, entertainment - basically everything we spend in a location. That doesn't include expenses back home, insurance or flights, which we pay for from income.
We (2 adults) stayed in Mexico city from Oct 1 - Oct 31st. We did have our son visit for a week, and took him out sightseeing and out for several meals, which we paid for. We paid $75 for a doctor/housecall visit for him as well (he's fine now, but he had a nasty gastro infection from something he ate).
Our grand total for the month came to $3518, so under budget by $482.
The breakdown:
Our 1 BR apartment in Roma Norte (utilties, wifi included) : $1346
Restaurants (ate at least 1 meal out every day): $1003
Sightseeing tickets/excursions: $535
Groceries: $310
Transportation (cabs, ubers): $156
Misc (dr house call, street donations, etc): $168
