By the Numbers: Marseille, France

France is expensive. We knew that before we went, so no surprises here. Marseille is a fun city, lots to do, lots of day trips nearby. It's vibrant and diverse. I would go again, defnitely. We ate out frequently, but had a few more days where we ate at "home" than we usually do. And we tried to eat in many of the ethnic restaurants because they were so good and so much cheaper. A multi course meal in a Tunisian restaurant ran us just under $40 for two, including drinks and dessert. A multi course meal in a good french brasserie ran us about $100. We took day trips to Avignon, Cassis and Aix-en-Provence, which were all well worth it.

Our budget was $3,000 USD and we spent $3920 Rent was still our highest expense, but the apartment was light and bright and extremely well equipped, with a very helpful host. (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/480047) . Note - rent was for the full month, even though we only stayed 3 weeks. It was just cheaper with the month discount to do it this way. We spent more on groceries since we made more meals at the apartment.
