By the Numbers: Lisbon

rainespencer

Our budget for our travels is $4k per month, which covers rent, food, transportation, utilities, sight-seeing, entertainment - basically everything we spend in a location. That doesn't include expenses back home, insurance or flights, which we pay for from income.

We loved Lisbon. Loved it! and it is one of the cheapest big cities in Europe. But we blew our budget by a very large margin here.

We had a budget of $4500 for our 34 days of travel. We spent a few days in Miami Airport area to break up the flight time. I wouldn't do that again. Hotels are expensive, the neighborhood was not great and it just wasn't worth it. Because of how our flights timed out, we also had a hotel when we first arrived in Lisbon.

We took the train to Porto and spent a couple of nights there. Definitely worth it, even though the hotels again busted our budget a bit. And of course, when you are sightseeing and playing tourist on a weekend trip, you just spend more.

We took a side trip to Milan to see family, but they graciously put us up and fed us while we were there.

Our grand total for the 35 days came to $6337, so over budget by $1837 (OUCH)

The breakdown:

  • Our 1 BR apartment in Lisbon (utilties, wifi included) : $2300 for month

  • hotels: $1147

  • Restaurants : $1588 (the holidays really impacted this!)

  • Sightseeing tickets/excursions: $130

  • Groceries: $346

  • Transportation (cabs, ubers, metro, trains): $544

  • Misc (urgent care visit, meds, street donations, etc): $283

For the math minded among you -- while accommodations were 54% of our spending, they were 77% of what we had budgeted. Note to self: try to avoid hotel days.
